Multiple Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes Delta Plane into Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia was hit by significant turbulence on Friday morning.
Flight DL41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, an airline spokesperson told. A number of the onboard staff required medical attention.
Local paramedics said they evaluated five individuals, and transferred three of them to a medical facility with minor injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and headaches. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.
This marks the latest incident of aircraft being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with researchers saying that global warming is a major factor.
On board were 245 people and 15 crew members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson noted, adding that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.
Emergency responders said they received a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane landed, and response teams were ready and waiting at the airport.

Bumpy air is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while instances of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.
Data suggests that there are around 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a sum of over 35 million flights that are conducted globally.
