The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
